CJ, there is little debate here. Solar power, when it's deployed, has much less impact on the environment than coal.

But at what cost? Is it worth it?

Remember that the cost of manufacturing these solar panels represent the time and energy it took to obtain the materials, build the manufacturing plants, and build the panels themselves.

It reminds me of those closed loop geothermal heat pumps that some "environmentally-friendly" homes have. If it cost you $50K to build the thing, was it worth it, and how much of an environmental impact does that $50K represent?
