To me, that's funny as hell, MM. I've used that expression many times, and I have no idea where I picked it up. And I'm from the East and not the South. But I'm sure it was in my youth.

I used it with a (white) friend of mine a few years ago, and he was laughing about it. He just thought it was funny, but the racist angle never came up.

Until I read your post, I never thought about the racist angle. But it surely could be offensive to any black person who took it wrong or was prone to taking offense.

Edit: and I agree with you that Obama doesn't deserve any condemnation for the lipstick comment. Just campaign rhetoric.
