Letter: Republican policies not right for middle class America

Mr. Ramesh Ponnuru states that Paul Ryan's anti-poverty and budget bill are strong ones that deserve support. I beg to differ with him.

Ryan's plans would tear the safety net wide open. Millions of people would fall deeper into poverty. The pope has already attacked his plans as being immoral. When Ayn Rand is your guide on economics, what do you think would happen?

Ryan's plan is a reverse Robin Hood plan. Take from the poor and middle class and give to the rich.

If Mr. Ponnuru thinks the Republican Party is the best way for the middle class to go, he is sadly mistaken. Republican policies have destroyed the middle class in this country. Since 1979, millions of middle class people have lost their homes, jobs, pension, and health care due to the Republican Party's supply side economic policies.

Today, the Tea Party-run House of Representatives have driven the Republican Party so far right that it has driven our economy to a standstill. Right-to-Work laws and anti-union laws have caused middle class workers pay to be stagnant over the last 35 years. During this time the wealthiest among us has seen their income raise close to 400%.

In closing, Mr. Ponnuru, I have a question for you. In the last 100 years can you name a bill written by and made law by the Republicans that helped the middle class and poor citizens of our great country?

Good luck in your search for an answer. You might find one or two.
