Ratan:
I just finished watching PBS on Pakistani military takeover of the Govt.
I gathered the following:

Military has been in charge of nuclear program in pakistan ever since its inception. Civilian Govt had very little say.

In the elections less than 15% of the voting population voted and graft and bribery were major factors in vote buying. The pakistani added that democracy in pakistan is a contrived system, because the votes were bought and only 15% voted.

The General Musharaff is a professional soldier of the vanishing genre in pakistan. One gentleman said that the best relations pakistan ever had, was when military was in charge.

It appears that Musharraf saw a falling morale in the military and suggested taking on the Indians in Kargil to get the military together. Sharif seems to have agreed to that. it is surmised that he will not take on the Indians now.

Gen. Musharaff doesn't care what the west thinks. But the reality will sink in when bankruptcy is forthcoming. pakistan can't survive without foreign aid.
