Richard Lugar: “Georgian Developments Point to Azerbaijan’s Importance”

Senator Richard Lugar was in Baku on August 25 to discuss with President Ilham Aliyev issues of cooperation in the fields of security, energy and agricultural development.

“We discussed new ways of developing important strategic relations and friendly ties between the two countries, said Lugar, deputy chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The Senator added that the United Stated appreciated Azerbaijan’s recent humanitarian assistance to Georgia.

Lugar said recent developments in Georgia had a direct effect on Azerbaijan. “These developments showed the importance of Azerbaijan. It was clear once more that Azerbaijan is [an] energy security source for the entire world.”

Commenting on the prospects for the Nabucco pipeline project, Lugar said he had discussed the issue in Baku and would have talks with Turkish officials during his visit to Ankara.

“There are a number of questions awaiting solution: how much gas is required to fill Nabucco, how much can Turkey consume, how much can be delivered to the north? After my travel to Turkey, I will visit Romania, Hungary and Ukraine, as well as the European Union and NATO headquarters. Since Nabucco is of great importance for these countries, discussions should be held with them,” he said.

Asked about the Turkish prime minister’s initiative on a Caucasus Union, the senator said he did not want to express his opinion on the issue before meeting with Turkish authorities.

“But I hope that this initiative will help strengthen our united efforts in the region” he said.
