Which, of course, brings in the federalist question. If the majority of Californians want (a) and the majority of the whole country wants non-(a) (assuming we can get agreement on what the majority really wants) do the Californians have the right to legislate (a), or can the rest of the country override their desire and pass non-(a) legislation which forces Californians to obey non-(a) against their preferences?

Be careful if you come down too strongly on the states rights side -- there are still states which I believe would restore segregation if they had the option.

And how about on the local level? How far down do these rights of self-determination go??
