MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- -- Industry Grows More Than 18% In Two Years --
The market for equipment, materials and services for the semiconductor and flat panel display industries will reach $65 billion worldwide in 1997, according to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), the international trade association. This figure represents a growth of more than 18% from just two years ago.
The 1997 figures for the semiconductor equipment and materials market total $61.2 billion, including equipment ($25 billion), services ($14.2 billion) and -- the largest growing category -- materials for processing and packaging ($22 billion, up 5% from 1996 figures). Projected 1997 figures for the flat panel display market total $3.8 billion, with equipment accounting for $1.5 billion and materials for $2.3 billion.
SEMI forecasts continued growth to more than $90 billion by the year 2000.
Advancements in the semiconductor equipment and materials industry enable semiconductor manufacturers to make advanced chips that in turn allow greater power and efficiencies to be employed in a host of electronics products. These range from computers to autos, from VCRs to home security systems, from telecommunications to "smart" thermostats. Conversely, continued growth in the electronics industry creates increased demand for chips to drive these many everyday products. The electronics industry is expected to grow to $920 billion in 1997 from $851 billion in 1996.
"This is a very exciting time in the semiconductor materials and equipment industry," says SEMI president Stanley Myers. "Every year, we're building new fabrication facilities, creating additional job opportunities and adding value to what we call the 'electronics eco- system' through the advanced technological processes and equipment we develop for the semiconductor industry."
SEMI's role within the industry includes fostering overall growth and business for its members, working in-depth on environmental, health and safety initiatives and supporting government policies that favor open trade.
Based in Mountain View, Calif., SEMI is an international trade association serving 2,000 member companies participating in the $65 billion semiconductor and flat panel display equipment and materials markets.
