NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of Ascend Communications Inc. Monday
were pressured after the company released July sales and earnings that
some market players said were below expectations.
In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Ascend said it had
sales of $62.8 million and net income of about $2.9 million, or 2 cents
a share, for the first month of the third quarter.
First Call Inc. has an earnings estimate of 36 cents a share for the
full quarter. Cowen & Co. analyst Chris Stix expects the company to post
revenue of $342.5 million for the full period.
Some analysts have said Ascend was expected to have somewhat of a
back-end loaded quarter, but Stix characterized the July figures as a
"light" beginning. He has a "neutral" rating on the stock.
Other market players also said the July data were disappointing.
Ascend earned 20 cents a share, including charges, on sales of $154.6
million in the year-ago third quarter.
Ascend shares (ASND) in late-morning trading were down $2.625, or
5.3%, to $46.813 on volume of 6.2 million, compared with average daily
volume of 8.2 million.
Company officials weren't immediately available for comment.
