Elmer, re:<that embarrassing episode of your's about E56 was hardly the kind of thing that would allow you to throw stones. Have you finally accepted the fact that "FIXED" actually means "FIXED"?>

The embarrassment over E56 is all Intel's. They released two versions of the FlopperMine errata in December. The first version said that E56 applied to the Floppermine but was fixed. The November edition of the errata did not mention the E56 error, therefore, the conclusion at that point would be that between the mid-November edition and early December that an errata was discovered and fixed in the FlopperMine.

Can you draw any conclusion other than that? No, it is the only logical conclusion from the data which said "no E56 in mid-November" and "E56 found and fixed in early December." Now, if the errata was only discovered after mid-November, surely a large number of Floppermines were shipped with the defect. THAT IS THE ONLY POSSIBLE CONCLUSION. E56 seems very serious indeed!

The conclusion was incorrect, only because INTEL goofed up the first release of the FlopperMine errata in December. In short, E56 should never have been listed in the errata for Floppermine -- the errata list itself had an erratum! Can you believe that! Intel can't even list all the errors in FlopperMine without screwing up the list!

So, Intel released a new errata list later this month. In the final errata list for December they admit that E56 was never an erratum for the FlopperMine.

There are still other serious bugs in the FlopperMine which Intel says "may be possible to fix in the BIOS" -- bugs which can cause FLOPPERMINES to FREEZE. No Intel BIOSes for either their i820 boards or their i840 boards have fixed these bugs. I know this because the erratum list for the motherboards lists the processor errata that are fixed in the BIOS, and NONE OF THE NEW BUGS IN THE OCTOBER to DECEMBER LISTS ARE LISTED AS 'FIXED.'
