If Harwood is right, then the center of the struggle will be the midwest and thus the jobs/economy issues.

However, hovering on either side of that are two questions: (1) can the dems find a genuinely and widely attractive candidate--still much too early to tell; and (2) just how far will the continuation of the present decline in Iraq and the economy not only lower Bush's numbers but create a kind of snowball effect--Bush is not good on tv save in scripted situations--if these two decline, he becomes less believable and lacks the Clinton talking gift.

Would be strange if both happened--neither a strong dem candidate nor a strong rep president.
