The current GSM arrangements do not include QCOM, AFAIK, so the assumption that they will serve as a model seems open to question, at least as far as QCOM and SPINCO are concerned. If SPINCO serves any purpose, it will be because the other manufacturers MUST deal with it on its terms to be able to ship any product containing CDMA for which they are not already licensed, independent of any agreements they may make among themselves.

SPINCO's reason for existence is to obtain royalty-free cross licenses for GSM or other IPR in exchange for a subset of CDMA rights. Beyond this, I don't know why SPINCO might wish to participate in UMTS, for the simple reason that I don't have a clue as to what it is. -g-
