Katherine Harris pro-life candidate
Katherine Harris can win. Harris Voted NO on allowing human embryonic stem cell research. Voted YES on restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions. Voted YES on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime. Voted YES on banning partial-birth abortion except to save mother’s life. Voted YES on forbidding human cloning for reproduction & medical research. And the good news is that Harris rated a 0% from NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record. She earned a Master’s degree from Harvard University with a concentration in international trade and negotiations. During her term in the Florida state senate, Congresswoman Harris passed over one hundred bills, while serving as chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce and Economic Opportunities and as vice-chair of the Senate Committee on Banking and Insurance and the Senate Committee on Governmental Reform. Her legislative achievements included an economic development package that helped fuel Florida's dramatic rise from 42nd place to 1st place in the nation as a state to start a new business or grow an existing business; a significant increase in teacher salaries; and stiffened penalties for white collar crime and for crimes committed against the elderly.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Harris is only 3.9 points behind Nelson. In the end if Harris can convince voters that she represents their values she will be elected. Neilson has an approval rating is barely over fifty percent (50%), but many voters may not be on his side of many important issues. According to Harris, Neilson is more liberal than Shumer or Hillary, and Neilson is not running for office in New York where his record might give him an advantage over his opponent. Nelson was rated 100% by NARAL, indicating a pro-choice voting record. The numbers reflect the percentage of time the representative voted the organization's preferred position. Nelson voted NO on banning partial birth abortions except for maternal life.
The list of names of other republicans who some believe can beat Neilson are Toni Jennings Glenda Hood Charlie Crist Bill McCollum Dave Weldon Tom Feeney, Tommy Franks and Florida House Speaker Allan Bense, Rep. Mark Foley, of Palm Beach; state House Speaker Allan Bense, of Panama City; Sarasota auto dealer Vern Buchanan, a candidate for Harris' House seat; state Senate President Tom Lee, of Brandon; and Rep. Clay Shaw, of Fort Lauderdale. If your name has not appeared in the list, be patient there is still time.
The liberal media probably believes that Harris is a stronger candidate than many conservative bloggers and other loyal republicans, otherwise why would the LIBERAL MEDIA (LM) be spreading so much ink across their pages about how poor her chances of victory are? The NY Times described the Katherine Harris campaign as “flagging”, but the facts prove that her campaign is anything but “flagging”. The fact is that two earlier polls had Harris trailing Nelson by 17 points and 12 points respectively
The newspaper of record is not the only one crowing about Neilson while demeaning everything about Harris. The Orlando Sentinel does not even acknowledge the existence of the Wall Street Journal poll. The Sentinel reported that Neilson leads Harris in the polls by 20 points. If Harris were to poll her friends and family they are likely to be unanimous in their support for her. So much for polls, I suppose.
The St. Petersburg Times (FL) as late as March 15, 2006 was gleefully reporting that Harris was “well behind” Neilson in the polling. Of course that was well after the Wall Street Journal poll was released that defined “well behind” as 3.9 points. When Kerry was 3.5 points ahead of Bush in the last election the LIBERAL MEDIA (LM) virtually gave the upcoming election to Kerry and gave Bush no chance for a second term, and we all know that history repeats itself, and if that is true in this case then Harris has an excellent change of winning.
The LIBERAL MEDIA (LM) has no facts with which to attack the Harris record of accomplishments, so as usual it resorts to innuendo. The Miami Herald reported that the Harris campaign is “beleaguered”, which in a sense is true if being besieged by Florida newspapers accounts for the harassment that Harris has had to endure since making her decision to stop the hand counting six years ago.
Sarasota Herald-Tribune (FL) reported on March 14, 2006 that Harris is trailing badly behind Nelson in most public polling, apparently giving a slight nod to the only poll that might be accurate, the one in the Wall Street Journal.
We know that Harris has a good shot at displacing Neilson when we read that there are at least 223 recent news stories with the word "scandal" close to her name. But the power of the heretofore MSM is dying a more than slow death thanks to FOX and conservative bloggers. The LIBERAL MEDIA (LM) is doing everything it can to convince voters that she cannot be trusted, but it says the President cannot be trusted either. Nothing new in this approach at character assignation since no “republican” can ever be trusted according to the LIBERAL MEDIA (LM).
While it is true that Harris still is a year away from a hand recount of her victory, she is holding her own without much help from many fellow bloggers or other loyal conservatives.
As if to say “we democrats have no platform to present to the voters” Karen Thurman, Chairman of the Florida Democratic Party can only say that the Katherine Harris campaign is a “train wreck”. Where, when and how the wreck occurred, she does not say. The Florida newspaper accounts of Harris continue to describe everything about her and her campaign in pejorative terms. Sarasota Herald-Tribune (FL) referred to the Harris bid as a “bizarre race”. St. Petersburg Times (FL) headlined “More signs of disarray in Harris campaign”.
Eventually loyal republicans will stand behind Harris if only to unseat the hand puppet like Neilson. Remember that Governor Jeb Bush, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings, and members of the state's Congressional delegation have indicated that they will campaign for Harris, and they will.
