Michael,

In what sense is CPQ a "tech mania" momentum stock? Compaq singlehandedly eliminated IBM's control of the PC industry in the 1980's by introducing their own 386 standard PC before IBM did. Ever since they have demonstrated steady earnings and revenue growth on the back of a great line of products. A 10 year chart of CPQ shows nothing but nice steady growth. No crashes. No surprises. Why on earth would we expect that in a panic people would dump historically ROCK SOLID CPQ "so fast it will make your head spin"?

Today Compaq has bet the farm on the emergence of Microsoft NT and the Pentium Pro processor as an alternative to RISC machines for mid-range servers. Just in time, NT is achieving critical mass and corporate orders are flowing in en masse. They aren't going to stop. Rather, they will accelerate for at least the next half decade. The will push CPQ to a 60 billion dollar company in 5 years. Where is the stock going to go? UP.
