Re: Sun and Java

I still haven't figured out how Sun will actually make money from Java. After all, AT&T invented C and UNIX and they never amounted to anything revenue or profit-wise for them. Any insight into this question is appreciated.

As far as vulnerabilities go, hardware sales still account for virtually all of Sun's business. As the low-end and midrange markets are gobbled up by NT, Sun is forced more and more to compete head-on with IBM in the enterprise space. While IBM and Sun seem to be uneasy allies today against MSFT (the enemy of my enemy is my friend) as an ex-IBMer I can assure all here that IBM does not take displacement of any S/390 system lightly and will fight ferociously to defend its turf. At some point the gloves will have to come off and Sun will find itself in a pincers between NT below and IBM above. Try as I may, I can't find a happy outcome in that scenario for Sun.
