Tom Shales, Pathetic Hack

In an article printed in today's Washington Post, the bloated, over-the-hill lickspittle formerly known as television critic Tom Shales put down the potato chips long enough to write this about RatherBiased.com:
<<<
The major flaw of the original story was that documents used to support its allegations were not thoroughly verified. Rather likes to think of himself as a "reporter-anchor," but he hardly has the time to go rummaging through files and halls of records to check on the authenticity of documents that are decades old.
All this has been argued to death and could be argued until doomsday. One of the sad things about it is that it gave the right wing, which has had its sights on Rather for years now, something to cheer and dance in the streets about. Over the years, ultra-conservatives have made Rather their public enemy No. 1. They deluged him with hate mail, founded a Web site called Ratherbiased.com and were the prime suspects when a computer was used to jam his phone lines. >>>
Little did we know that we had anything to do with an alleged attempt phone attack on Rather, secretly took millions from Karl Rove and Richard Scaife all while managing to be "ultra-conservatives" who are ambivalent about the Iraq war, taxes and Social Security, are divided on whether abortion should be legal, oppose the Patriot Act, and dislike media conglomeratization.
But hey, who are we to argue with the overtly left-wing Shales, who never once bothered to contact anyone from RatherBiased.com, all while failing to disclose his personal friendship with the subject of his piece?
In truth, this site (whose core contributors have never spoken at partisan events or even given or received a cent from any candidate or party) is arguably more of an "independent reporter" than the man who has managed to flatter Shales out of his meager wits. True, we've been very harsh on Dan, but if Shales is content to call us right-wing, he really should call Rather left-wing since Dan has gone hard on Republicans.
We're probably expecting too much of him, though, considering that fairness and accuracy rank about as high on Tom Shales's priority list as eating a well-balanced meal.
UPDATE: To get an idea for just how much of a sycophant Shales is, see this earlier quote from him in a New York Observer story on what CBS should do to increase its ratings:
<<<
Tom Shales, the veteran TV critic at The Washington Post, had an idea who that young anchor might be: “Bring over Anderson Cooper from CNN, where he is languishing,” he said. “He will bring young viewers back to network news, and all the commercials won’t be for denture adhesives and erection-restorers. CBS would then have the youngest anchor as well as the most interesting. And the smartest—which they’ve had for all these years with Dan.”
As it happens, Mr. Cooper made his first segment for 60 Minutes Wednesday this month, which may be broadcast in January.
Mr. Shales also said he’d fire CBS News president Andrew Hayward and replace him with … Dan Rather. “It’s the logical thing” for Mr. Rather to do, he said, “and he won’t take shit from the boys in L.A. And every now and then he could still do a piece.” >>>
