Personally....

I'd rather have a couple of grain bins full of corn, wheat or soybeans along with some cattle. Some ammunition to protect them would come in handy too.

The last time I checked those gold and silver coins were a bit rough on the teeth.

Point being...In the context of the crisis being discussed I sincerely believe any edible commodity would have a far greater value than a bucket of coins. Easier to trade and I believe the value would keep increasing as people became hungrier. Starvation and self preservation would be extremely motivating.
