Mark, I keep thinking there has to be a way to accurately represent the areal density and price change. I think I finally have it.

The price that is most useful is not the price of a 10GB drive. Instead it is the price of a 1-platter drive of a given interface (IDE or SCSI) and spin speed.

Since it is the # of platters, heads, intfc and speed that govern cost. Maybe there are other factors such as cache memory.

I am not at all suggesting that price of a specific model over time is not useful. It is useful for some things. But the most accurate leading indicator of profits is what I outlined above. I think by those measures, the price of a disk has really not dropped at all.

I realize that your explanation really does imply this conclusion. But I thought I'd make it more explicit.

I'm up to my elbows in WDC, HDD and MXTR. Hopefully they'll not disappoint.

Thanks for the report.
