We shouldn't forget Poland started the ball rolling. When Poland broke free, the rest of the communist countries quickly followed.

The president of the AFL-CIO, Lane Kirkland, was instrumental in making it happen. He made several trips there to teach Lech Walesa how to organize his union. The strength of the Solidarity movement, combined with Pope John Paul's visit, brought communism down in Poland.
