thread..I've mention many times that the Japanese respect compaq business praticces:

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) President and Chief
Executive Officer Eckhard Pfeiffer today accepted the "Prime
Minister's Trade Award" -- a highly distinguished honor sponsored by
The Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Japan (MITI).
Presented during a ceremony at the official residence of Japanese
Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, the award recognizes Pfeiffer's
role in improving the Japanese trade structure through foreign
imports, as well as his promotion of mutual trade understanding
between Japan and foreign countries.
Pfeiffer's commitment to research the Japanese market and develop
industry-standard products and practices has led to Compaq's success
in Japan. Additionally, as a member of the Japan-U.S. business
council, Pfeiffer advises other executives regarding business
activities based on Compaq's experiences in Japan.
Pfeiffer was the only representative outside of the Far East to
receive the award. Other executives receiving the award were Mr.
Shiwawhon, Chairman of the Thai Petroleum Corp.; and Mr. Wada,
President and CEO of Yaohan, the famous Japanese retail chain.
"We are firm believers...that trade between countries is
the most effective avenue to progress and prosperity for all," said
Pfeiffer in his remarks at a ceremony to accept the award. "Mr.
Prime Minister, your accessibility and dedication to market access
and skill in building strong coalitions has made you a commanding
international figure. And you are a pioneer in driving the economy
forward by giving top priority to streamlining government and
deregulation."
"The MITI is proud to honor Eckhard Pfeiffer for his
contributions to U.S.-Japan trade. He has led Compaq K.K.'s success
of today and demonstrated that the Japanese market is open and
reasonably easy to access, therefore, his achievement encourages
other foreign companies to enter the Japanese market," said Takeshi
Isayama, Director General, International Trade Administration Bureau
of MITI.
Walter F. Mondale, the American Ambassador to Japan, said, "We
are very pleased that Eckhard Pfeiffer and Compaq have been rewarded
for their contribution to trade. Compaq has demonstrated that an
American company with state-of-the-art technologies can have a major
impact on the Japanese market. I hope Compaq's success in Japan will
encourage other American companies to make a similar commitment to
this important market."
Pfeiffer reflected on Compaq's entry into the Japanese market in
1992 -- a time coined by the Japanese as "Compaq Shoku" --
highlighted by drastic price cuts that dramatically grew the market
for PCs in Japan. "From the beginning, Compaq K.K. employees have
joined me to make sure that customers in Japan have access to the
same product diversity and competitive prices as U.S. customers.
"To our delight we see more and more Japanese companies moving to
networked PCs and servers and embracing the Internet. Compaq is
determined to meet Japan's information technology needs as we move
into the 21st century," added Pfeiffer.
Pfeiffer was nominated for the Prime Minister's Trade Award by
the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), which submitted the
nomination to MITI.
Compaq announced the opening of its wholly owned Japanese
subsidiary, Compaq K.K., in September 1990. The following year
Compaq K.K., headed by Masaru "Vic" Murai, introduced a broad range
of desktop, portable, and notebook computers and servers designed
exclusively for the Japanese market.
