Nanophase Participates in Major Nanotechnolgy Conference
VP Business Development to Give Keynote Address
ROMEOVILLE, Ill., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Nanophase Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: NANX - news), a leader in nanomaterials and nanoengineered products, today announced that it will be a corporate partner and make two presentations at the upcoming 2nd Annual Nanostructured Materials 2001 -- Applications and Commercialization conference to be held in Chicago, June 21st to June 22nd. Nanostructured Materials is an international conference focusing on nanotechnology applications and technology transfer for commercial uses.

Dr. D. J. Freed, Nanophase vice president for business development, will chair the Hybrid Nanocomposites forum and provide the conference opening address. He will also make a presentation entitled ``Commercial Applications of Nanomaterials'' illustrating the practical implications of engineering nanomaterials to provide unique products and solutions to mainstream market applications. Dr. Roger Cayton, Nanophase senior application scientist, will make a presentation entitled ``Abrasion Resistant Nanocoatings'' describing how property improvement of abrasion-resistant protective coatings can be enhanced by the incorporation of nanoparticulate materials.

According to Dr. Freed, ``We view attendance and presentations at these industry conferences as a key strategy that enables Nanophase to keep its first-mover advantage in the nanotechnology arena. Participation allows the company to stay abreast of rapid current developments, both commercial and technology-based, and provides a forum for Nanophase to make potential customers aware of our continually increasing capabilities.'' Further information about the conference can be found at knowledgefoundation.com .

``This conference reflects the increasing global interest and focus on nanotechnology,'' stated Joseph Cross, Nanophase's president and CEO. ``There is a growing awareness of the technology's potential as evidenced by the Bush administration's recent budget proposal to fund nanotechnology research for $485 million in fiscal year 2002, which is a 15 percent increase from last year.''

Cross stated that the increased US initiative would include twelve government agencies -- twice the number currently participating -- and will fund research from pollution control to biotechnology. To date the US nanotechnology initiative has helped more than thirty universities launch nanotechnology research centers, including Northwestern University's Institute for Nanotechnology and the California NanoSystems institute. Additionally, several other countries have national initiatives, including the UK, Australia, Germany, and Japan, which announced its own $410 million program in March.

``This conference also benefits the Chicago area's desire to be a leader in nanotechnology. This conference is expected to draw some of the leading nanotechnology researchers, as well as the major companies in the field. Additionally, the BCC Fine, Ultrafine, and Nano Particles 2001 conference, which is the leading nanotechnology conference at this time and had significant international attendance last year, will also be held in Chicago during October. Nanophase is a corporate sponsor of this conference and has been invited to make a keynote presentation. Dr. Mihail C. Roco, Senior Advisor for the National Science Foundation and Chair of the National Science Subcommittee on Nanoscale science will also be a keynote speaker. With the research center at Northwestern, Argonne national laboratory, and Nanophase, among others, Chicago is creating the technology base and infrastructure to establish a leading position in this technology.''
