"tens of thousands?" I think it would have been very hard to get the US Army to fight the Red Army and vice versa. The American army wanted to go home right now. The Soviet Army wanted to keep going. A colleague of mine involved in repatriating Soviet POW's from Germany said that most of them refused to leave the camps in the American zone. He said that that Soviet soldiers had to drag most of them out to the trucks to take them back to Russia, where many of them, it turns out, were shot or imprisoned.
