I have never been afraid of death

Have you ever been in a situation where death seemed imminent or inevitable?

It is easy not to fear death while sitting in front of a computer. Having an angry drunk sticking a rifle barrel in your eye in a place totally beyond any law other than that of the gun is a little different. So is trying to swim out of a grade 5 rapid. Or many other things.

It is not an intellectual fear. It has nothing to do with perceptions of the afterlife. It is instinctive, visceral, and probably inevitable.

For one thing, most varieties of death are painful. Do you not fear pain?
