StarMedia and Compaq Extend Mobile Internet Offerings To Wireless Carriers
in Latin America

NEW YORK, Sep 11, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- StarMedia Network (Nasdaq:
STRM) (http://www.starmedia.com) the leading Internet media company for Spanish-
and Portuguese-speaking audiences worldwide, today announced an agreement with
Compaq Latin America Corporation (http://www.compaq.com/la), the Latin America
and Caribbean operation of Compaq Computer Corporation, to combine StarMedia
Mobile's wireless portal technology with Compaq's hardware, solutions, and
support infrastructure in Latin America.

This multi-year marketing agreement will allow Compaq and StarMedia Network's
mobile division to offer StarMedia Mobile's Wireless Internet Server (WIS) and
portal technology combined with Compaq's services and hardware products, to
enable wireless carriers with competitive wireless portal solutions. StarMedia
Mobile's portal technology provides wireless carriers with mobile Internet
applications like e-mail, customized content and personal information management
services. This joint agreement reinforces StarMedia Mobile's Applications
Service Provider (ASP) business model by bolstering its offerings with products
and services from the leading company in computer hardware across the Latin
American region.

services and applications for wireless carriers in Latin America," said Enrique

Wireless services in Latin America are on the rise. As of December 1999, there
were 41 million cellular subscribers in Latin America and the International Data
Corporation (IDC) estimates that this number will grow to more than 191 million
in 2003.
