Thanks Tom. What strikes me is the contrast between last year and this year. Although the sales increase may not appear to be that dramatic in annualized percentage terms compared to 1995, a lot of '95 & early '96 sales were based on the introduction of WIN 95. This year's growth is based on strong intranet/internet growth, communications hardware and laptops. The growth is broad based and in all segments of the market with the posible exception of the consumer market, which makes up only about 20% of the overal market. DVD and multimedia sales are expected to stimulate consumer sales as the year progresses.

A lot of concern has been placed on the numerous PC architecture and CPU introductions that threaten to confuse the market. I don't think that this will be nearly the factor it has been during prior platform migrations for two reasons; 1] the effects are diversified over several products, and 2] the performance jump in going from a Pentium class system to a K6, M2 or PII system is not so dramatic or critical that it will cause many companies to forgoe plans to upgrade - it's just not what is forcing their decisions. The primary considerations are how to implement networking and intranet/inernet strategies and what software platform to migrate to. Analysts comments on the delay of WIN '97 (98) is that this will probably be good for Microsoft becuase now buyers won't wait and will implement WIN '95 or NT.
