Undoubtedly there is a need for campaign reform. Elections should be funded by people (by setting aside a portion of their taxes, for example) and not by companies.

Regarding tobacco, nobody is forcing anyone to smoke. So it has to be a personal decision. Of course, the other side of the coin is personal responsibility. About the only move that I can support is legislation that punishes those who sell tobacco to people below 18.

Guns are somewhat different. There has to be a middle ground between honoring the Second Amendment Rights of the people, which are very, very important (just look at how the Kosovar Albanians suffered at the hands of Milosevic's troops; if only they had the right to bear arms, their story would have been a lot different) and ensuring public safety. And I believe such a middle ground can be found.
