It was a remarkable piece, indeed. Though uttered by a British officer, it's emblematic of American conduct of the Iraq situation since Bush became President.

I remember well being taught as a child that the fertile crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates was the cradle of civilization. I don't know whether that squares with current anthropological theory, but regardless the people and artifacts of Iraq are worthy of deep respect and careful, thoughtful conduct of war.
