Great observation about the absurd nuttiness that sometimes pour forth from Giants of Science. I believe it's a recurring theme and I wonder if it's not a consequence of genius butting heads against the "not fully knowable" aspect of reality. Newton and his foray into alchemy readily comes to mind. We've seen it more recently in Crick's brush with Consciousness - and what may be up your alley - the absurdity of parallel universes to explain the quantum paradox of a single photon interfering with itself
