This campaign is not bringing out his better side.

Boy, isn't that the case. But we do change as we age. Perhaps there was this reckless, win at all costs, side to him that was minimized. Aging brought more of it out. His conversion to supporting Bush, changing his mind on the torture bill, etc. All to get Bush's support, or at least non-opposition, to his getting the Rep nomination.
