India's PC sales jump 43 percent

India's personal computer industry is booming despite a nationwide recession, and sales are expected to top one million in the current fiscal year, the country's main industry association said yesterday.
Unveiling findings based on a sample survey for the first half of the 1998/99 (April-March) year, the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT) said desktop PC sales grew 43 percent to 460,000 units compared with the year-ago first half.
Second half growth was expected at 50 percent in view of a major liberalization in import policies and the unleashing of an Internet revolution, Ram Agarwal, MAIT's president, and a senior executive of Wipro Infotech group, told a news conference.....

DoT issues net service-provider licenses to Hindujas and Wipro
The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has granted a category A license to the Hinduja promoted IndusInd Distributors for providing internet services on an all-India basis. Another group company, IndusInd Cable has bagged a category B license for the lucrative Mumbai circle.
Wipro Infotech has also been granted a category A license to provide internet connections all over India. These and a host of other proposals for setting up ISPs were cleared by DoT.
With this the number of ISPs who have won licenses for providing internet and related services has gone up to 30. The government recently threw open the internet service sector to private participation...... ciol.com
