I am well aware of the optiplex work, and also the capability of Dell's engineering team. They could certainly do an alternate design - something that Gateway can not say.

But would they? My sense is that Intel does not believe they would, or that even if they started down that path, that Intel could pull them back into the camp.

I think one of the best things Dell could do would be to produce a complete AMD design. That would put Intel on notice that they can't take Dell for granted. But I don't realistically see Dell doing that.

Do you believe that Dell could field an AMD design any time in first half of 99? I don't think so. That gives Intel lots of room to pretty much do what they want short term.
