FORE Systems Announces New Family of Stackable 10/100 Ethernet Switches

LAS VEGAS -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE), a global supplier of networking solutions based on an Intelligent Infrastructure(TM), today announced the introduction of the new ES-2810, a 24 port 10/100 Ethernet switch. Priced at $154 per port, the ES-2810 is a uniquely cost effective and scalable solution that allows up to 196 fully managed ports in a single stack.

FORE Systems' recent announcement of a strategic alliance with Intel Corporation has enabled the availability of such breakthrough technology at reduced price levels. The scalable switching solution offers features such as flexibility, expandability and fault tolerance typically found in more expensive chassis-based solutions, while also providing the ease-of-use and affordability characteristics of stand-alone switches. In addition, its ability to connect to FORE's Intelligent Infrastructure -- a multiservice network backbone comprised of ATM switches -- makes the ES-2810 a one-of-a-kind switch.

The ES-2810's expandable base unit comes standard with 24 ports of 10/100 autosensing Ethernet and two expansion slots for additional 10/100BaseTX (FSM-4/TX) or 100BaseFX (FSM-2/FX) ports. The optional SIM (Stack Interface Module) and the SMM (Stack Matrix Module) provide the interfaces for scaling multiple switches.

"With the ES-2810 we deliver the ability for our current ES-3810 users to achieve higher 10/100 port densities at a very affordable price, while maintaining ATM backbone connectivity," said Ron McKenzie FORE Systems' vice president of strategic marketing. "In addition, customers with a FORE backbone will now be able to extend the benefits of FORE's Intelligent Infrastructure on price sensitive, high density edge networks."

"This product is one of the first benefits customers will realize from the new strategic relationship between FORE Systems and Intel Corporation," said Ashok Madanahalli FORE Systems' Product Line Manager for ATM Internetworking. "Customers deploying the ES-2810 can expect to accomplish OC-12 ATM connectivity from the closet stack to the data center in the near future." FORE Systems is committed to delivering scalable switching solutions for networks varying in size and applications, while providing the ability to harness all the advantages of an Intelligent Infrastructure.
This commitment is further reinforced by the ease-of-use and simplified web- and windows-based management capabilities offered by the ES-2800 series.

"Included with every ES-2810 switch is FORE's specialized management software, that enables network designers to administer the switches from virtually any networked PC," according to Madanahalli.

Pricing and Availability

FORE's ES-2810 switches will start shipping in June 1998 at a list price of $3,695. The FSX-4/TX (4 port 10/100BaseTX module) and the FSM-2/FX (2 port 100BaseFX module) will also be available at the same time at list prices of $995 and $1,495 respectively. The SIM (Stack Interface Module), priced at $299, and the SMM (Stack Matrix Module), is priced at $1,995, available with the rest of the components, provide the scalable stacking capability.
