Kathy,
If you in fact relied solely on "financials", you would buy only good sound comapanies that have "made it". The trick is to spot the future winners before they have achieved the status of having good financial reports. Companies like people have to walk before they run. Lastly! I have not read anything that could even vaguely be called sleazy on this thread. My sincere advice to you is..Lighten up! and try to enjoy it!
