GOING TO CHURCH

It was a holy day, a day of rest
which might have been Sunday, or might have been Tuesday.
I went to church all day
in a cathedral of rock, built by water and wind.
It has red walls, black buttresses, brown arches
holding up a hard blue vault
decorated with clouds and turkey vultures
paved with green water turning to brown.

Ocotillo and Barrel Cactus
sing to me from the choir loft.
Kwagunt and Saddle Canyons
are side chapels off the main sanctuary
whose foundation stones were laid 1.8 billion years ago.

Europe has Notre Dame and St. Peter's
and Westminster Cathedrals.
Asia has the Temple Mount where Abraham proved his loyalty
and the place where Buddha sat under a tree
till he saw the Truth
and all of these are holy places
but so is Mile 53 in the Grand Canyon
where I saw 500 different shades of red
in the Redwall Limestone
which are 500 different faces of God.
