William-- You raise very valid and interesting points. My only comment would be with respect to your point about support for Apache. I believe that, if demand warrants, a large number of free-lance and/or independent support organizations would form to provide support, similar to the support structure around Unix (I know that large Unix vendors provide support, but for the most part, Unix evolved as freeware with no corporate support services, so consultants and system integrators stepped up). It'll be interesting to see how this (Apache) plays out...
