The Untold History of the United States, recently aired on Showtime made much the same point. Nixon was a deceitful son of a bitch, but his policies ex-Vietnam were not poorly conceived. And the China recognition and SALT treaties were both major advances from cold warrior doctrine. Most of the presidents from Johnson-on were portrayed as major disasters in bed with the MIC, which is hard to argue with.
