TOSHIBA SELECTS S3 FOR ITS EQUIUM 6200D
S3's Second Generation 3D Accelerator Brings Advanced Multimedia Capabilities to the Corporate PC market
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- S3(R) Incorporated (Nasdaq: SIII), the world's largest supplier of graphics, video and multimedia accelerators(1), announced today that Toshiba America Information Systems has selected S3's ViRGE(R)/DX 2D, 3D and video accelerator to power its Equium 6200D commercial desktop PCs. In addition, Toshiba recently announced that it had selected the ViRGE/DX 3D accelerator for use in its Infinia line of consumer PCs. Demonstrating the versatility of the S3d platform, these announcements highlight S3's continued leadership in the home PC market while showing the ongoing expansion of S3's 3D acceleration technology into the business PC market.
"Combining advanced acceleration hardware with proven software support, S3's 3D accelerators successfully meet the performance, functionality and reliability requirements of both the consumer and commercial desktop PC markets," said Ron Smith, vice president of marketing for Toshiba CSD. "Utilizing S3's strengths, Toshiba is able to offer the leading-edge multimedia features of the consumer PC market while reducing `cost of ownership' for the corporate PC market."
"In 1996, S3 became the dominant supplier of 3D accelerators by developing solutions geared for the entertainment PC market," said Harry Dickinson, senior vice president of sales for S3 Incorporated. "Now, as indicated by the Toshiba Equium 6200D, S3 is expanding this leadership by delivering 3D acceleration solutions outside of the consumer space to markets such as the corporate, small business and SOHO markets."
Toshiba's Equium and Infinia lines The Toshiba Equium line marks the company's first entrance into the commercial desktop arena. The Equium 6200D incorporates the S3 ViRGE/DX and provides a desktop form factor with a Pentium Pro(R) 200 MHz processor and Microsoft(R) Windows NT v4.0 preloaded. The Toshiba Infinia line of advanced multimedia desktop PCs targets early adopters, families and multimedia enthusiasts. The Toshiba Infinia 7161 and 7101 incorporate the S3 ViRGE and offers a 166MHz Pentium processor with MMX Technology.
S3's ViRGE/DX Accelerator Based on the S3d(TM) architecture, the ViRGE/DX accelerator implements key architectural innovations which significantly increase the performance of S3's 3D platform. These features -- found only in the ViRGE family -- include SmartFilter technology for higher performance and higher quality texture mapping; and a parallel processing perspective engine for increased throughput. With support for MIP mapping, tri-linear filtering, transparency, atmospheric effects and Z-buffering, the ViRGE/DX is designed to deliver the next level of 3D acceleration for both the entertainment and business desktop PC markets.
