Scientific-Atlanta Helps to Bridge the 'Digital Divide,' Donates Set-Top Boxes to 4th Graders Through WISH TV

Sponsorship of WorldGate Program Delivers Education Through the Power of Internet on TV

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's first two-way interactive set-top boxes, developed by broadband leader Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA), are deployed and delivering video-on-demand, e-commerce and Web- browsing services to television sets around the country. But a new company- sponsored service, WISH TV(SM), launched today in Washington, DC and set to begin this school year, will showcase one of the most powerful capabilities of a Scientific-Atlanta set-top box: the power to educate and fuel the dreams and futures of some special fourth graders in Newtown, Connecticut.

WISH TV, developed by WorldGate (Nasdaq: WGAT) and sponsored by Scientific-Atlanta, is donating WorldGate's Internet on Every TV(SM) service to fourth-grade students at all economic levels, with a twelve-month goal to reach 100 schools by the fall of 2001. Students at four Newtown elementary schools (Hawley, Head O'Meadow, Middle Gate and Sandy Hook) will receive donated keyboards, Scientific-Atlanta set-top boxes, and cable service from Charter Communications, empowering them with filtered access to the Internet on their television set at home and at school, eliminating the need for a computer.

"WISH TV opens the door for all students to the incredible equalizer called the Internet. These business and community leaders of tomorrow are now able to tap their imagination and realize their potential like never before with a Scientific-Atlanta set-top box, a keyboard, and access to a whole new world of information delivered by the power of TV," says Perry Tanner, vice president of marketing, Scientific-Atlanta. "With Scientific-Atlanta set-top boxes, television is evolving into an interactive platform for a full range of on-demand services, from the delivery of videos and pizza to education and research with a click of the remote control. We look forward to working with cable operators across the country in further eliminating the digital divide."

"We believe that the WISH TV initiative has all the right ingredients to attack the problem of children growing up in the Internet world without equal access," says Hal Krisbergh, chairman and CEO, WorldGate. "The information age is moving at a rapid pace and we need to do everything in our power to ensure that no child is left behind."
