Most of the oil shale is in the bookcliffs which run from Rifle, CO west thru Green River, UT and north to Price, UT

Canyonlands and the parks areas lie south of the major deposits of oil shale. Problem with oil shale as of right now is water is going to be very necessary to get the oil out.

Steam is proposed as the main component in production. And there is only a couple of sources for water in that quantity.
The Colorado River and the Green River.

In the 70's vast amounts of land was purchased by oil companies to acquire water rights. A lot of this land has been sold since then. I wonder who owns the vast majority of that River basin water rights now?

Lost Angeles may wanna pay attention to this. Your toilets could run dry. Not lots of other sources for water.
