S-- No, one does not "HAVE" to lay fiber in conduit...and I can testify to the fun one has when it is just "run open"... Some of the first fiber we layed, and later cut, was when the only way to fix it was by the "fusion" method...IOW..melt the darned ends back together... and we always lost a few dB tryng that... Later "gluing" methods worked better, and the alignment methods improved (elecrical alignment vice physical alignment), so we could then limit the losses to about a single dB.. But the SMART way is to put the stuff in conduit, if you can affort it... and QWST CAN, and DOES... Making their network all the more valuable. Great long-term investment, IMHO... Duane
