In 1968 Eugene McCarthy was often called a stalking horse for RFK. He did the initial legwork and when popular opinion started turning against LBJ, RFK jumped in. In that case kennedy and mccarthy did not like each other.
Fast forward to now. Picture dean as the dem that has to be knocked off for Hillary to have a chance. Put Clark out there to do that. Once weakened, dean may self destruct. After all he is an arrogant sob. Now the big danger is that Clarks steals it not only from dean but from the other dems. Clintons are betting against that happening and at a propicious time, Hilary enters to break the logjam. She owns the left and sooths the hurt dean voters. General Clark as running mate sooths the Kerry military voters and the lieberman conservatives. The unions give up on gephardt and.....
The only thing that is not clear is whether clark really feels that clinton is giving him a window to get the nomination and if he does then the promise would be Hilary as VP and a 16 year clinton rule. Bill probably will be secy of state and will have plenty of interns at his disposal. Mike
