I doubt commissions are going much lower. The larger discount firms aren't going to move the scalpers from the daytrading firms anytime soon imo. So the profitable firms there are probably ok. More likely that a prolonged bear market will clean out the daytrading firms.

I think the simpler/faster(a.k.a direct access intelligent auto routing) these large discount firms make it to trade, the more profitable they will be from the millions of ma and pa's out there.

Seems to me the big discount firms have burned a lot of clients down when the payment for order flow MM's turned off auto/ex and robbed them blind. Perhaps direct access as a marketing tool will lure them back to the tables with the "perception" of a more level playing field.
