Borrowing during WW2 was 150% of gdp. Today it is a low single digit number--think it was 2%. If you believe that 9/11 changed everything, you are less concerned about the deficits. Homeland security comes first and like football there is both an offensive and defensive team to fund. Iraq falls to the offensive team. They did great. Defense needs to hold those gains. Thus 87 billion. The greater issue is winning not spending. Having said all of that, i understand that it is hard to make the transition from fiscal conservative to big spender. mike
