S3 DRIVES ADOPTION OF NEXT-GENERATION MEMORY TECHNOLOGY

DDR SDRAM Provides Up to a 3x Increase in Memory Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Establishing a foundation
for future multimedia performance advancements, S3(R) Incorporated
(Nasdaq: SIII) announced today that it has joined with other industry
leaders to drive the standardization of Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM
memory technology for the mainstream PC industry. Providing up to a 3x
increase over today's memory technologies, DDR SDRAM will extend the
capabilities of currently used synchronous memory to enable
significantly higher levels of performance for tomorrow's PC users.

"Based on existing synchronous memory architectures, DDR SDRAM provides
the PC industry with a virtually painless way of achieving significant
performance increases, said Neal Margulis, senior vice president of
Research & Technology for S3 Incorporated. "Just as S3 was
instrumental in migrating the PC platform from Fast Page to EDO DRAM,
S3 will work with other industry leaders to drive the adoption of DDR
SDRAM as the memory technology of choice for next-generation mainstream
PC designs."

S3 -- the first multimedia acceleration company to participate in the
review and definition of the DDR SDRAM specification -- is currently
working with both the SDRAM II Forum and the Joint Electron Device
Engineering Council (JEDEC) to finalize industry acceptance of DDR
SDRAM memory technology. On Thursday of last week, S3 hosted a meeting
of the SDRAM II Forum at its headquarters in Santa Clara (CA) to
finalize the DDR SDRAM specification. On Friday, S3 hosted a meeting
with the JEDEC Solid State Memories subcommittee to initiate
ratification of the proposed specification.
