Qwest Announces Diverse Route Between Seattle and Portland; New Link to Begin Closure of Pacific Northwest SONET Ring; Nationwide Network Grows to 16,285 Miles

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1998--Qwest today announced it has reached an agreement with another company to assist in the construction of an OC-192 fiber optic system between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon.

The previously existing Qwest network served both cities, but this addition adds a SONET ring diverse route that will add a protective and restorative element to the Northwest portion of the Qwest nationwide Macro Capacity(SM) Fiber Network. This Seattle-Portland diverse route will add 200 route miles to Qwest's planned 16,085 mile U.S. network.

"One of the most technologically advanced features of the Qwest fiber optic network is its SONET ring protection and restoration capability. By constructing a diverse route between Seattle and Portland, Qwest's service to the Northwest region is protected by advanced SONET technology in the event of a fiber cut," said Joseph P. Nacchio, president and CEO of Qwest.

"This agreement also reaffirms Qwest's dedication to delivering to its customers the most technologically advanced and reliable data, voice and multimedia network in the world."
