As far as replacing work station goes, have no fear. Sun will still have the largest pie of all. The only real compettitor is HP. Its like Coke and Pepsi. In this case Sun is the Coke and HP is the Pepsi! And sure there will be mountain dews, and sprit and 7UP, etc. But the real thing is still Coke and everyone else is basically irrelevant!
As for Java, the software does not make any money for Sun yet! It does benefit the hardware side of the business. Java Beans is a superb technology that (unlike Microsoft COM and ActiveX technology) makes it possible for all softwares (regardless of the underlying implementation) to run anywhere, anytime and by anyone. It is going to make Software like hardware where proprietary applications become irrelavant. Just like how you build a PC by buying its various hardware components such as DRAMs, monitor, CPU, etc. from a store such as Fry's electronics and then hooking them up together. You can buy 3rd party software components and hook them up together easily using JavaBeans technology and create an application very easily and have that application run not only as a desktop only application but also as an internet/Web application regardless of the underlying Operating system. Microsoft also provides such a capability but as long as it is under Windows!
As for DEC, wintel, having faster servers, etc. I can assure you that Sun is not just sitting there and watching. Their R&D is their best asset (just like Microsoft). Its funny how the stock does not reflect their best assets: their people and R&D.
Also the second half of 1997 will be the time when Sun will be introducing the NC's. It is not yet known how NCs will be taken by consumers but big corporations apparently have shown a great deal of interest.
In the short run SUNW's stock maybe a bit scary to buy but this stock will be flying high very very soon.
