Nonetheless, it was a necessary invention, a way for the liberal elite to delegitimize a conservative victory.

I think that "delegitimize" is unduly damning there. It may be that some were looking for a way to delegitimize the victory. But I suspect that most were just seeking a way to understand it. When you have a world view that you believe in, it hard to get your head around actions that fly in the face of it. After you've banged your head against the wall a few times, you look for any way of explaining it that makes sense. When other people act in ways that you find incomprehensible, despite repeated attempts to comprehend, it's natural and normal to assume they must be stupid or demented or manipulated or evil. That's the way the brain deals with such conflicts.

We are so polarized that people have stopped trying to communicate. Rarely to sides even bother to explain their positions. And when they do, they can't relate to the opposition enough to explain them in ways that resonate with the other side. It requires an understanding of both world views and a nimble mind to explain something to the other side in a way that resonates. It's too tough to tackle so people resort to demonizing those who don't "get it."

I think that Krauthammer has the mental capacity to be a communicator and I'm disappointed that he's just stroking his constituency.
