Spent a coupla hours last talking with a former member of, and navigator with, the 509th Composite Group/509th Bomb Wing.

This is the outfit that made both the Nagasaki and Hiroshima runs.

He was on an accompanying aircraft for both runs. After the war, he became a surgeon. I learned much and heard some incredible stories of heroism before and since including action faced by his two sons who became career military.

I am going to have lunch with him soon. Mostly I want to ask about the attitudes and motivation of himself and the men before and after the drops. I believe we will likely need our nuclear arsenal in the near future. Historical perspectives of war have always fascinated me. I believe these old-timers possess essential elements of information that can guide us to future victory.
