I always thought that the traditional Jewish view of the foetus, which is that it is a potential person, made more sense practically and morally too. It's wrong to kill a potential person. But if you have to weigh the rights of the potential person against a full person, the mother, you have some leeway to make decisions. It gets round this all-or-nothing it is a person!/it isn't a person! argumentation.
