you're right about the cpi, and the fed also knows it. i think for now they will hold the line on rates given the new bias toward tightening. we should all keep in mind, however, that the last rate cut was a surprise cut in the face of the asian crisis, and now that that situation is stabilizing, imho the fed would be well within its rights to raise rates back to where they were before the last rate cut, regardless of what inflation does. by then, also, the market will have discounted the effect of the rate hike, so the pain will be lessened. just a thought.
