I just store them on top of a filing cabinet in my office. Store in a cool dry place. Running the laptop thats plugged into external power all the time will kill the battery. Thats why I remove my batteries from all notebooks. The battery is for people who travel and need power on their travels. If you are basically using the computer as a desktop replacement, meaning never moving the computer, the battery should be removed. If its dead, take the battery to a recycling depot. Don't bother buying a new one.
